Thanks for visiting my Avon Walk page. I’ve committed to participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. It’s a big commitment, one that will require me to spend the next several months training and fundraising. But breast cancer is a big disease, one that still affects far too many people, and I’m determined to do everything I can to help put an end to it. The money I raise will be managed and disbursed by the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade to help provide access to care for those that most need it, fund educational programs, and accelerate research into new treatments and potential cures. I’ll be just one of thousands of people that will walk up to a marathon and a half over a weekend, raising awareness of the cause and educating even more people.
I can’t do it without your help. Though I’m required to raise at least $1,800 in donation, I plan to raise much more!
I hope that I can count on your support.
You can make a donation to my fundraising campaign right here on the website by clicking on "Click Here to Support Me." If you prefer to write a check, just contact me and I'll send you the information and form.
As I prepare for this exciting event, I plan to update this page frequently so that all my supporters can follow my progress, so please visit often. While you're here, you might want to spend some time on the site to find out more information on why this event is so important, and the organizations and people that will be helped by the money we all raise.
Thank you in advance.
My thoughts on why I walk
Topics
Sometimes you just gotta walk!
Ya know, it's not easy training for this walk. I wake up early to walk, try to walk during the day at work, and then walk again at night to make sure I'm ready.
It's a hell of a lot of walking. (Excuse my French Daddy)
The reality is that to be prepared for anything one must take those steps. I'm taking those steps to prevent and cure breast cancer.
So today, again, I walk!

A little cheese with that whine and new shoes!
I'm tired and my feet hurt.
I know, I'm a big baby.
Today the "cold-that-every-else-has" hit me and I feel like vomit, but I still will train because it's the right thing to do.
I also have this huge blister on my foot, so I think it's time for new training shoes. (And I have an excuse to shop!)
Stop whining, get up and get moving! That is my motto today!

Daily Training Tips
Diary of my morning:
I'm sitting in my warm house trying to muster up the courage to get out and walk in the rain. I mean, come on it's raining outside, surely I'm not supposed to be uncomfortable - surely nobody would expect me to get a little wet and feel a little chill while I'm trying to walk to help raise money to find a cure.
Then it hit me. I remember the experiences of a dear friend who recently endured chemo. It wasn't uncomfortable, it was downright painful. I thought of my beautiful nieces, all three to young to concern themselves but who could endure the pain and suffering of breast cancer one day. I thought of the faces or children in my class who've watched their mothers suffer. I thought of my friends who've been taking the Brach-A genetic test, and the tears we've shed when finding out who is positive.
It's just freaking rain!
Today I walked and thanked God I was healthy enough to do so.

Training
Training for this walk is something I do for both myself and others. Tonight I bought a new pair of tennis shoes to train in, in March I'll buy the shoes I'll use while I walk.
The holidays pose another problem when it comes to training, First, the food is so good, rich and tempting but adding another 10 pounds would hurt my chances at finishing 39 miles. The holiday rush also take so much time out of training.
A special thanks to Dick Dagaurd's State Farm Insurance Company for their generous donation this week. Together we're all in it to end it.

Stupid Ankle Sprain won't stop me
I've been frustrated over this past week. My training was going very well, when one moment I was trotting along and found myself on the ground.
My ankle has been wrapped for a week and I'm scheduled to take a bone scan on Monday, but now I've gone a whole week without walking or running.
UGH!!
Today I am committed to try to do something, no matter how small to keep myself on track. I may try mall walking or just pushing a basket around the grocery store to see how that helps.
Just like the walk last year, I refuse to let any small thing keep me from my goal in April.
I'm in it to end it!

Wearing Pink
One of my best buddies and fellow walkerista, Melinda gave me several pink bracelets this week. I've also had a great kid-crew member, also a former student whose mom is a survivor give me an adorable pink necklace.
Yesterday while sitting in my class one of my students asked me why we all wear pink. Actually, it's an interesting question and deserves some thought.
I told her I wore pink to help raise awareness, to help young and old women remember to take time to be in charge of their own health, and because there are many incredible women I know who have survived because of early detection.
"Wow, that was a magic three!" she smiled.
Thinking about it, I realize without the research there are many incredible women that I've shared my life with that I'd never have met. Without the research there are many women that I'd be mourning for right now.
I wear pink for them, and for the women who are to come.

First Day of Training
While I've been walking and exercising, today is my first real day of concentrated training. Last year I really felt like I had to get ready quickly, and I didn't feel as confident on the walk weekend as I wanted. I did make my goal in 2009, but for my 2010 walk I really want to make sure I am confident going in.
Today I walked 5 miles. My regular walking partner, Keeper, (in the picture) has some joint issues, but he was able to walk it with me without a problem.
Today the training and fund raising begins!

A Year
I just signed up for this walk, AGAIN! Many of you thought I was insane the first time, but I found the training and the walk uplifting. Of course spending the time with one of my best fitness buddies and teacher friends, Melinda, is always a huge plus!
Keep checking back for updates on my schedule of training and on any walks we might be doing to help us prepare for this one.
If you'd like to join our Walk-Team or just support us with words of encouragement please email me.
