We Did It!!!

I can’t believe it is over! I had such a great time over the weekend walking with 2,800 other participants in San Francisco from 42 states, including 256 breast cancer survivors. Together we raised over $6 million.

Overall, it was a very moving experience. We met so many wonderful fellow walkers, shared stories about why we walk, were motivated along the route by dedicated (and at times very creative, humorous) supporters, volunteer staff at themed rest stops, entertaining biker buddies helping us cross busy intersections, and a troop of volunteer San Juan police who escorted us along the path. These people kept us laughing, thanked us for walking, distracted us from focusing on our bodies, but kept reminding us to fuel up, stretch and hydrate. They stood on corners or set up their own tented ‘stops’ to hand out free beverages, food and encouragement. They dressed up in pink or in costumes. One woman dressed in breast cancer ribboned pajamas and pink accessories and stood along the path both days the entire time dancing to a looped tape of ‘I Will Survive.’ I swear she worked as much as us. One biker buddy wrote a message of support on boxers and stood on the corner ‘mooning’ walkers waiting to cross the street. One of the organizations, Open Hand, that receives funding from the Walk, decorated and stood cheering for us on a full city block. Open Hand is a non for profit that provides groceries and food for patients who have life threatening illnesses. I tried to take as many photos as possible to share with you so you too can experience our walk. The only thing missing was my family who has offered support along the Chicago routes for the past four years.

I found that the generosity, support and display of goodness in people was present in San Francisco just as much as it is in Chicago (and I’m sure other host cities). We definitely made a statement towards awareness, hope and early detection. The Walk was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle on Sunday, and everywhere we went people knew about the event. The money raised will go towards education, research, and treatment. Most importantly, without you none of this would be possible. Without you I would never have been able to take one step past mile zero. I know I have said it before and I truly mean it you make such a difference!
